Diversified family farm with a year-round farm store, dairy, bakery, produce, and pick-your-own crops.
Upinngil is a diversified family farm founded in 1987 by Clifford Hatch and Patricia Crosby, farming about 100 acres across several plots in Gill. Its year-round farm store and bakery, the Little Red Hen, offer fresh milk, cheese, eggs, pastured pork, grass-fed beef, rose veal, vegetables, fruit, and flowers. The farm runs a pick-your-own program for strawberries, raspberries, snap peas, herbs, and flowers. A Farmstand CSA program lets members pre-purchase produce credit at a discount and spend it at their own pace throughout the season. The bakery bakes from scratch, featuring farm-grown and locally grown eggs, fruits, and vegetables in its recipes. Upinngil accepts SNAP and HIP benefits alongside cash, check, credit card, and CommonGood. Learn more on their About Page.
Upinngil describes its market garden as no-till and regenerative. The farm manages land that has been in continuous cultivation or grazing for more than 300 years in the Connecticut River Valley, and strives to maintain a diverse, interconnected ecosystem across its acreage. Dairy cows are rotationally grazed on Upinngil pastures and fed Upinngil hay in winter; milking cows receive non-GMO grain from Green Mountain Feeds. Pigs are raised on whey from the farm's own cheesemaking, local non-GMO grain from Clover Luck Farm, and fresh forage from pasture edges. Chickens range freely, consuming fresh forage, farm-grown wheat, whey, and kitchen scraps. Grass-fed beef cattle are sent to Adam's Farm Slaughterhouse in Athol, a facility designed by Temple Grandin. The bakery uses regionally grown and milled flours from Coastal Queen, Ground Up, and Farmer Ground, and emphasizes short, minimally processed ingredient lists.
