Just Roots is a nonprofit organization that develops and operates the Greenfield Community Farm, a diverse vegetable farm and education center on a 61-acre city-owned property. Founded in 2008 as a grassroots group, Just Roots launched its first CSA farm share program in 2013 and has grown into one of the largest SNAP-enrolled, low-income CSA programs in Massachusetts. The farm grows over 50 types of fruits, vegetables, and herbs on roughly 7 acres, distributing through CSA shares, a farm stand, the Greenfield Farmers Market, local restaurants, and donations to local food pantries. Just Roots also runs a community garden with more than 60 individual plots. Through its Food is Medicine program, it partners with healthcare organizations to connect food-insecure patients across Massachusetts with food from the farm and other local farms. Just Roots operates on land owned by the city of Greenfield and guided by a principle of leaving the land richer and more productive each year. The farm uses a sliding-scale payment model for its CSA, including SNAP and the Massachusetts Healthy Incentives Program (HIP), making shares accessible to low-income members. Its Three Season CSA extends access to local produce from November through May, featuring vegetables, legumes, frozen fruits and vegetables, and value-added products sourced from the farm's own fields and other local farms. The add-on meat share is sourced directly from named Pioneer Valley farm partners, including Sage Farm, Reed Farm, Everyday Farm, Flagg Farm, and Red's Best. The farm also offers weekly drop-in volunteer opportunities and educational workshops on and off the farm.
