Grass-fed, grass-finished beef and lamb, Romney fleece, and breeding stock from a Siskiyou County cattle and sheep ranch.
Tawanda Farms is a cattle and sheep ranch in Siskiyou County, Northern California, run by two longtime friends and business partners with over 25 years of shared history on the farm. The operation grew from a deep interest in fiber arts: Romney sheep were the starting point, and a small herd of Murray Grey beef cattle was added to complement the lamb already being raised. The farm sells grass-fed, grass-finished beef and lamb, Romney fleece in a wide range of natural colors, and quality breeding stock for both breeds. Books about shepherding, written by the farmers, are also available for purchase. Learn more on their About Page.
Tawanda Farms raises Murray Grey cattle and Romney sheep entirely on grasses and forbs, with no growth hormones or maintenance antibiotics used. Animals graze on the farm's pastures, and the farm is in the process of transitioning those pastures to dry-land species fed by winter rains. Pastures are managed through a cattle-first, sheep-second rotation, which is designed to break the parasite cycles of both species and maintain pasture health. Butchering takes place only in the fall, when animals come off fresh pasture and before they begin consuming stored hay. Both breeds were selected in part for calm temperament, which allows the animals to be handled quietly and with minimal stress. Tawanda Farms is a member of the American Romney Breeders Association and the Murray-Grey Breeders Association, and its beef is Certified Murray-Grey.
