Staff of Life traces its sourcing philosophy to its founding, when it sought wheat from Midwestern family farms still using pesticide-free, traditional agricultural methods that align with what is now recognized as organic farming. The Santa Cruz store operates in a building officially certified as a Green Building by the City of Santa Cruz. An Energy Management System uses skylights and automatic daylight harvesting controls to reduce electrical lighting use; all coolers and freezers share a six variable-speed compressor system, and heat reclaimed from condensers is used to preheat the building's hot water. The store has been designated a Clean Ocean Business by the City of Santa Cruz Public Works department for practices that reduce storm-water pollution, and bio-swales in the parking lot filter runoff before it re-enters the ground. An electric vehicle charging station (operated via ChargePoint) has been available on-site since 2012.
