Santa Cruz Permaculture Farm is a small family farm on 26 acres of California's Pacific coast, established on this land in 2022. It grows over 80 crops, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers, and sells through a customizable CSA program, a farm stand, farmers markets, U-Pick, an online shop, and wholesale to restaurants and caterers. Value-added products include hoshigaki dried persimmon, smoked peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, infused vinegars, hot sauces, and a range of jams. The farm also operates as an education center, offering permaculture courses, farm tours, and harvest dinners, with over 1,000 alumni from its programs.
Santa Cruz Permaculture Farm is certified organic by CCOF and the Real Organic Project. The farm is transitioning its soils from conventional organic tillage to a no-till, biologically complex system using compost, worm castings, cover crops, and beneficial insects to build biodiversity and regenerate soil. It applies 3-5 tons of compost per acre each year and grows a cover crop each winter to feed soil microbes and improve organic matter. Pest and disease management relies on regionally adapted crop varieties, planned crop rotations, physical barriers such as row covers, and the cultivation of native habitat to support beneficial insects and birds. Irrigation draws from surface water via Elliot Creek and Ano Nuevo Creek, and the farm uses drip irrigation, cover crops, mulches, and permaculture water-retention techniques to conserve water and prevent erosion.
