Pasture-raised chicken, duck, pork, and turkey from a 54-acre Pescadero farm.
Root Down Farm is a pasture-based meat farm founded in January 2014 by Dede Boies on 54 acres in Pescadero, California. The farm raises chickens, ducks, pigs, and turkeys, selling fresh and frozen cuts at Bay Area farmers markets and by appointment on the farm. Root Down Farm attends weekly markets at Ferry Plaza in San Francisco on Saturdays and Clement Street in San Francisco on Sundays. Holiday turkeys are also available by pre-order. The land is leased from the Peninsula Open Space Trust and sits at the base of Cloverdale Valley, with redwoods to the east and the Pacific Ocean a few miles to the west. The farm has grown to include an on-farm pig breeding program, raising all pigs from farrow to finish on the property. Learn more on their About Page.
All animals at Root Down Farm are fed organic, non-GMO grain and raised without hormones. Animals rotate across pastures on a regular schedule, a practice the farm uses to support both soil health and animal welfare. Chickens are a slower-growing Pioneer breed, housed in mobile range coops that are moved every other day to fresh pasture, where the birds forage for bugs, grubs, seeds, and grass. Pigs live outside in pastures, contained by solar-powered electric fence with mobile housing so they can be continuously rotated. The pigs eat grubs, grass, and roots as well as organic vegetables and apples, supplemented with organic, non-GMO grain. The pig breeding program includes heritage and heritage-cross breeds such as Berkshire, Old Spot, and Hereford x Tamworth, all raised farrow to finish on the farm.
