Swanton Berry Farm was founded in 1983 by Jim Cochran and Mark Matze in Davenport, California. In 1987, it became the first California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF)-certified organic strawberry farm in California. The farm operates a daily farm stand offering fresh berry pies, strawberry shortcakes, hot soup, strawberry lemonade, strawberry apple cider, jams, and more. Organic strawberry u-pick is also available in season. In 1998, Swanton Berry Farm became the first organic farm in the country to sign a contract with the United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO, reflecting a long-standing commitment to fair labor alongside its organic farming practices. Swanton Berry Farm is certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and is also certified by the Real Organic Project and the Agricultural Justice Project. The farm grows strawberries without synthetic fumigants, using crop rotation with broccoli and cauliflower to manage disease and pests, and builds soil health with compost and organic fertilizers. Its union contract with the United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO formalizes its commitment to fair wages and worker welfare alongside its organic growing standards.
