Rootbound Farm was founded in 2015 by Ben Abell and Bree Pearsall, launching its first season of Community Supported Agriculture with 75 founding members. The farm has grown to serve a network of 1,000+ CSA members, farmers market supporters, and small wholesale partners, with all products sold locally. Its CSA program runs seasonally and offers customizable weekly boxes of fresh organic produce, with optional add-on shares for pasture-raised eggs, chicken, and lamb. Every product Rootbound Farm raises, including vegetables, eggs, chicken, and lamb, is USDA Certified Organic, inspected annually by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. The farm grows 50+ vegetable crops and builds soil health through cover cropping, crop rotation, reduced tillage, and green mulching. Sheep and chickens rotate through fallow crop fields to restore soil organic matter and deposit fertility, integrating livestock into cropping. Pasture-raised chickens live in mobile units moved weekly and eat organic grains raised without chemical herbicides, pesticides, GMOs, antibiotics, or hormones. The laying flock includes Isa Browns, Golden Comets, and Novagen hens; the meat flock is Cornish Cross. The 400+ Katahdin-breed sheep graze pasture and fallow crop fields on a 100% grass-fed diet, with farm-raised hay in winter. Organic livestock are raised without antibiotics, added growth hormones, animal by-products, or synthetic de-wormers.
