Family orchard specializing in hoshigaki (hand-dried persimmons), peaches, plums, pears, and seasonal tree fruit.
Otow Orchard is a family-owned and operated farm in Granite Bay, California, with roots going back to 1911, when the founding family first purchased the land. Today, Chris Otow Kuratomi and her husband Tosh Kuratomi carry on the orchard's legacy, growing a diverse range of fruits and vegetables through the seasons. The farm is best known for hoshigaki, the Japanese art of hand-dried persimmons, a specialty that has defined the orchard for generations. It also produces tree-ripened peaches, plums, pears, and other seasonal produce. Fruit is sold at a farm stand on-site, and hoshigaki are available for mail order and shipped within the United States. Otow Orchard is a member of PlacerGROWN, the Placer County agricultural marketing program. Learn more on their About Page.
Otow Orchard's hoshigaki are made through a slow, hands-on process each fall. Fresh persimmons are hand-peeled, strung onto racks, and massaged every three to five days over a period that typically spans three to six weeks per persimmon. Weather conditions are monitored carefully throughout. Harvest season begins in October and the process runs through January. The result is a dried fruit with concentrated persimmon flavor that is tender and moist.
