Miller Honey Farms is a family-owned beekeeping operation with roots going back to 1894, when Nephi Ephraim Miller started his honey business in Utah. The California branch, based in Newcastle, has been operating since 1974, initially to support the emerging almond industry. In 2019, Jason Miller and his business partner Ryan took over the company and continue to operate across Northern California and North Dakota. The operation produces honey sold through local retailers in the Auburn area and also sells nucleus bee colonies (nucs) for hobbyist and sideline beekeepers. Seasonally, the business also offers Mandarin oranges through local retailers. A sister company, Miller Honey Company, handles packing and distribution in the Rocky Mountain region.
Miller Honey Farms moves its hives according to the seasons: bees work almond, plum, and cherry orchards in California from February through March; spend spring in Placer County yards and Washington apple orchards from April through June; and travel to North Dakota from July through October for summer honey production. The honey is never cooked, filtered, pasteurized, or processed. The Gackle, North Dakota operation harvests over a million pounds of honey annually. Nucleus colonies are built from Italian and Carniolan queen stock, described as gentle races. Landowners can host beehives in exchange for a share of the honey harvested from those yards.
