A fourth-generation Iowa family farm raising eggs, vegetables, and livestock through soil-focused, regenerative practices.
New Family Farm is a century farm located two miles east of Elkhart, Iowa, with roots going back to when John and Ella Sorenson purchased the land around 1910. Tony, the fourth-generation farmer, leads the operation with a focus on raising food that nourishes both the land and the surrounding community. The farm runs a diversified operation that includes vegetable production, laying hens, and other livestock such as cattle and pigs. New Family Farm markets its products through Prudent Produce, a food hub co-located on the farm property. The farm's guiding philosophy centers on the idea that caring for the soil as a living system is essential to producing food that lasts.
New Family Farm approaches agriculture with an emphasis on soil health, treating the soil as a living community of micro-organisms rather than an inert growing medium. The farm expresses a commitment to a sustainable and regenerative future, acknowledging that conventional farming practices can erode topsoil and degrade water quality. Its diversified operation, which includes vegetables, laying hens, and periodically cattle and pigs, reflects a whole-farm approach to land stewardship.
