Horse-powered vegetable CSA farm with a farm store offering produce, yarn, sheepskins, and wool products.
Natural Roots is a horse-powered vegetable farm offering CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares to members who prepay for each season. The main season runs approximately 22 weeks, from early June through the end of October, with produce available for pickup on Tuesdays and Fridays. Members fill their own Natural Roots canvas tote bags with freshly picked and washed vegetables from the fields. Share options include Full-Time, flexible Part-Time (any 10 weeks of the season), and Winter shares, as well as Gift Cards redeemable at the farm store. The farm store, located in a roadside barn, is open to the public during CSA distribution hours and operates on a self-serve basis year-round. Beyond vegetables, the farm also sells yarn, sheepskins, and wool products.
Natural Roots uses a team of five workhorses in place of tractors for nearly all field tasks, including plowing, cultivating, hauling the harvest, and mowing and harvesting hay and grain. The horses are the primary source of manure on the farm and tread lightly on the soil, avoiding the compaction associated with tractor wheels. They are fed on grass, hay, and oats grown on the farm itself. The farm enriches the soil with compost, mineral amendments, cover crops, and grazing animals. CSA share pricing uses a tiered model: Sustainer pricing (full retail value), Standard pricing (20% discount), and Low Income pricing (30% discount, with a separate eligibility application). Low Income shares are eligible for Massachusetts SNAP and HIP programs and can also be paid in installments.
