Santa Lucia Highlands winery producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from a certified organic estate vineyard.
Morgan Winery was founded in 1982 by Dan Morgan Lee and Donna George. In 1996, the Lees purchased bare ground in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA and developed it into the Double L Vineyard, named for their twin daughters. The 48-acre estate is planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Riesling, with 20 different clones on 8 different rootstocks. The Double L Pinot Noir and Double L Chardonnay are the winery's two flagship releases. Morgan also sources fruit from long-term grower partnerships across Monterey County, including Garys', Rosella's, Tondre, Boekenoogen, and McIntyre vineyards. A tasting room, Taste Morgan, operates at the Crossroads Shopping Center in Carmel. Learn more on their About Page.
The Double L Vineyard became the first and only Certified Organic property in the Santa Lucia Highlands in 2002 (2001 per the vineyards page; the winemaking history page cites 2002). It is certified by Monterey County Certified Organic, accredited by the USDA. Compost tea is applied through drip lines four times each year to supply micronutrients and microbes to the soil. Each fall after harvest, a cover crop of vetch, barley, and peas is planted to add nitrogen and organic matter, then incorporated into the soil in spring. The Double L is also sustainably farmed, with sustainability practices encompassing social responsibility, clean water, energy conservation, and habitat maintenance. Morgan's winemaking approach is described as minimalist, paired with conscientious and innovative farming to produce wines of balance, elegance, and structure.
