Certified Naturally Grown market garden producing seasonal vegetables and plant starts in Grinnell, Iowa.
Middle Way Farm is a small market garden started in 2012 by Jordan Scheibel, farming just north of Grinnell on leased land since 2013. It grows seasonal vegetables and plant starts, with Certified Naturally Grown certification held since 2022. Produce includes carrots, garlic, cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, winter spinach, lettuce mix, and asparagus, alongside a spring plant sale each year. Vegetables and plants are available through Grinnell Farm to Table, the Iowa Food Cooperative, McNally's grocery, and Grinnell College Dining Services. The farm also offers gardening services, including starting or revitalizing vegetable gardens, custom rototilling, and garden planning.
Middle Way Farm holds Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) certification, which it earned in 2022 after years of operating chemical-free under organic standards. CNG follows the vast majority of certified organic standards and involves annual inspections through a participatory, peer certification process. The farm relies on biological processes that are renewable and build soil, and its intentionally small scale allows it to focus on land stewardship and produce quality. Growing methods include companion planting and intercropping with beneficial plants and flowers, native plantings such as shrub hedgerows and prairie, and the use of cover crops and in-field beneficial plantings.
