Meskwaki tribal farm growing beyond-organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers in Iowa
Red Earth Gardens is a Meskwaki tribal farm founded in 2013 as an enterprise of the Meskwaki Food Sovereignty Initiative. Its motto is "growing food, farmers, and community." The farm grows organic produce for the Meskwaki community as well as surrounding communities in Central and East Central Iowa. Products include vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers, available to purchase online. Red Earth Gardens also operates as a teaching farm, offering on-the-job training through the Promoting Tribal Economies Course (PTEC), where participants learn regenerative farming alongside workforce development skills. Red Earth Gardens describes its approach as "beyond organic," moving past minimum organic standards to maximize both ecological benefits and produce quality. The farm uses no-till production methods to build healthy, well-structured soils rich in living organisms. Soil health is maintained through precision soil testing, organic amendments, and farm-produced compost applied in ratios designed to balance soil minerals and support the soil food web. The farm also applies agro-ecology practices, including planting windbreaks, cover crops, native prairie strips, and pollinator and wildlife habitats, to reduce the need for external inputs and to manage pests and diseases through partnerships with nature.
