Family orchard growing olive oil, pomegranates, figs, guavas, and more in Sage, CA
Macala Orchards is a family-owned farm in Sage, California, inspired by its family's Italian roots. The orchard spans more than 20 acres and is planted with over 659 olive trees, 174 pomegranate trees, 86 zinfandel grape vines, 32 fig trees, 17 guava trees, and additional citrus, avocado, and persimmon trees. All products are made directly from the fruit grown on the property. The shop offers extra virgin olive oil in several blends, pomegranate juice, preserves (guava jam, fig jam, grape jelly, and pomegranate jelly), fresh seasonal produce, dried herbs, balsamic vinegar, and teas. Macala Orchards hosts orchard markets on its property throughout the year, and private tours are available by appointment. Camping is also available on-site through Villa Macala.
Macala Orchards grows with a focus on organic practices and low water usage, planting varieties suited to the dry climate of Southern California. The farm emphasizes drought-resistant trees and plants as part of its sustainability approach. Its extra virgin olive oils have earned multiple awards, including Gold at the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, Gold and Silver medals from the California Olive Oil Council (COOC), and Gold and Bronze medals at the California State Fair EVOO Competition, across harvests from 2013 through 2023. The farm notes that its trees provide natural habitat for wildlife, remove carbon dioxide from the air, and help reduce erosion.
