Drake Family Farms is a family-owned goat dairy farm producing artisan farmstead goat cheese from its own herd of Saanen, Nubian, and Alpine dairy goats. Founded in California in 2010, the farm traces its roots to a 4-H project started in 1984 by Dr. Dan Drake, who went on to earn a veterinary degree from UC Davis before establishing the California operation. Because the cheeses are both farmstead and artisan, all milk comes exclusively from the farm's own goats and the cheese is made on-site. The lineup includes Chevre in five flavors, goat milk Feta, and an aged semi-hard cheese. The farm also produces goat milk soap and goat milk moisturizing cream. Drake Family Farms holds Certified Humane certification for its goat herd. Goats are housed in open housing with access to both indoor and outdoor areas and are registered with the American Dairy Goat Association under the herd name Willow Lane. The goat diet consists of alfalfa hay, Bermuda grass hay, leaves, browse from farm trees, and barley grain; the farm does not feed corn or soybeans. Routine antibiotics are not used; antibiotics are given only for specific conditions under veterinary recommendation, and any goat treated is separated until milk tests clear of residues. Every batch of milk is tested for antibiotic residues by an independent, CDFA-certified lab. The farm has never used and does not use the bovine growth hormone rBST. Cheeses are produced in small batches using French cultures, with minimal mechanization.
