Left Field Farm operates a certified organic greenhouse and market garden, started from scratch in 1991 on wooded land in the Berkshire Highlands. In its greenhouses, the farm grows certified organic annual and vegetable plants for home gardeners, garden designers, local retail plant sellers, and other farmers. Its market garden produces a wide variety of certified organic vegetables, sold on the farm and at retail outlets and restaurants in central and southern Berkshire County. The team brings over 80 years of combined professional farming and horticultural experience to the operation. The farm's stated aim is to create a working landscape that, through organic agricultural and horticultural practices, is sensitive to the place it inhabits and the creatures that share it. Left Field Farm has used certified organic production methods across its greenhouse and market garden since 1998. All greenhouse tasks, including seed sowing, transplanting, weed management, watering, and fertilizing, are done entirely by hand without mechanization. Plants are grown under cool conditions using a locally made, certified organic, compost-based potting medium and a certified organic fish and seaweed emulsion fertilizer. In the market garden, transplanting, thinning, and harvesting are done by hand with hoes, rakes, and spades. Soil fertility is built through yearly applications of farm-made compost and mulch. Mulch hay is spread across the garden at the end of each season to protect topsoil and suppress weeds. Non-cultivated edges are scythed, and the cuttings are used as mulch within the garden. The farm maintains surrounding forest habitat to attract insectivorous birds, a primary ally in pest control, supplemented by hand-removal of unwelcome insects.
