Heron Pond Farm is a year-round produce farm in South Hampton, NH, founded in 1998 and owned by Greg Balog and Andre Cantelmo, college friends who studied soil science together. The farm offers summer and winter CSA programs, each running 20 weeks, with four share-size options and optional add-ons for eggs, dairy, mushrooms, and meat and seafood. CSA members can pick up at the farm store or at off-site locations in Dover and Portsmouth. The on-farm stand carries the farm's own vegetables, herbs, and fruit alongside value-added products from local producers. Heron Pond Farm describes its approach as biological farming, focused on maximizing biological activity in the soil. It is one of the larger cover crop growers in its area and fertilizes nearly all crops with organic composted chicken manure. The farm uses biologically based pesticides and does not use GMOs. Leafy greens and berries are not sprayed with anything, certified organic or otherwise. Weed control relies primarily on a flame weeder and tractor cultivators rather than herbicides. Non-biological pesticides are treated as a last resort, used only where no other approach is practical. The farm is FISMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) and GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) inspected and certified, and has Water Use and Soil Saving Management Plans in place. It works with the Southeast Land Trust to conserve portions of the farm, and has established a native pollinator protection plan developed with the NRCS and the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation.
