USDA certified organic vegetable farm offering CSA shares, a seasonal farmstand, and farmers market produce.
Wild Fern Farm is a small, hand-scale certified organic vegetable farm founded in 2021 on leased land at the historic Bakie Farm. Farmer Liz Willey studied environmental science at UNH and worked on New Hampshire vegetable farms for years before starting Wild Fern. The farm cultivates about three-quarters of an acre of field crops plus 2,500 square feet of high tunnel space, designed to stay small and efficient. Vegetables reach customers through a seasonal 20-week CSA, an on-farm farmstand, the Portsmouth Farmers Market, and wholesale through Nourishing the North Shore. CSA members choose a Full Share (8-9 items per week) or a Small Share (5-6 items per week), with multiple pickup locations. Members also receive a weekly email covering their share, storage tips, and recipe ideas.
Wild Fern Farm is USDA certified organic through MOFGA Certification Services and holds additional certification from the Real Organic Project. The farm's growing practices center on soil and ecosystem health. Specific methods include spreading compost mulch on the soil surface to reduce weed pressure and feed soil microbes, practicing minimal soil disturbance, and cover cropping between cash crops to keep the soil covered with living plants. The farm uses floating row cover for pest management and plants flowering species in and around the growing areas to attract beneficial insects for natural pest control.
