Harvest Market is an independently owned natural foods grocery founded in 1995 to serve Hockessin and surrounding communities. It carries one of the region's broadest selections of organically grown foods, alongside locally produced and Fair Trade products. The store also stocks nutritional supplements and related wellness products. In 2013, Harvest Market opened its in-house kitchen, which produces grab-and-go soups, salads, sandwiches, sides, and sweets, all made from scratch. The store employs an American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professional, who maintains an artisan cheese case and prepares seasonal cheese-pairing guides for shoppers. Harvest Market holds its products to a published set of standards. Foods may not contain artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup, or hydrogenated vegetable oils. Dairy must come from animals not injected with synthetic growth hormone rBGH (rBST), and meats must come from animals not given growth-promoting hormones, with a stated preference for Certified Organic or grass-raised sources. Eggs come only from Certified Organic or pasture-raised hens not fed GMO corn or soy. Over 90% of produce is Certified Organically Grown. In-season locally grown produce from farmers using sustainable methods and no synthetic pesticides is also carried. Since 2014, all new food products must be USDA Certified Organic for any at-risk ingredient, verified by the Non-GMO Project, or free of commercially at-risk bioengineered crops. The Harvest Market Kitchen holds a 3-star rating from the Green Restaurant Association.
