Apiary
Closed
Delaware apiary selling raw honey, comb honey, beeswax, nucleus colonies, and locally raised queen bees.
Douglas Bee Apiary is owned and operated by Duane Douglas, a local beekeeper who also runs the affiliated Planting Hope Apiary. Both apiaries were established in 2014, with Planting Hope originating through the Delaware Department of Agriculture's Veteran Beekeeper program. The apiary produces over 2,000 pounds of honey per year, sold as both regular honey and comb honey, alongside beeswax and beeswax cappings. It also raises and sells local queen bees and nucleus colonies for fellow beekeepers. Douglas also offers honey bee removal services for the Wilmington and New Castle County areas, relocating bees found in homes or trees to the apiary. Learn more on their About Page.
Douglas Bee Apiary raises local queens on-site and also partners with Boston Honey Company to supply additional mated queens. Nucleus colonies are assembled with frames of brood, honey, pollen, a young queen, and bees. Honey is typically harvested from July to September, with a possible spring pull as well. Duane Douglas uses bee and swarm removal calls to bring displaced colonies into the apiary rather than destroying them, giving those bees a new home. The apiary is also used to teach new beekeepers.
