Youth-run farm offering CSA vegetable shares, grown chemical-free on a two-and-a-half-acre site in City Park.
Grow Dat Youth Farm operates a two-and-a-half-acre sustainable farm on a seven-acre site in New Orleans' City Park, growing more than 50 different crops and harvesting an average of 50,000 pounds of fresh produce each year. The farm runs a 29-week CSA program, through which members receive a weekly box of vegetables and herbs; eighty percent of the harvest is sold through this program. Each weekly share includes a signature salad mix, kale, other leafy greens, fresh herbs, and seasonal produce such as root crops, satsumas, and cut flowers. SNAP recipients receive a 50% discount on CSA shares. The remaining twenty percent of the harvest is distributed through the farm's Shared Harvest program and to youth participants and their families. The farm also hosts field trips, tours, and farm dinners, and welcomes over 2,000 visitors each year. Learn more on their About Page.
Grow Dat Youth Farm is both a farm and an agro-ecological project guided by biodiversity, waste repurposing, and minimal ecological intervention. Produce is grown without toxic herbicides or pesticides. Over 50 crop varieties are grown at once, and crop rotation manages pests and protects soil nutrients. Intensive cover cropping, organic amendments, and minimized tilling have raised average soil organic matter to 7% in its fields. Cover crops such as cowpeas, sorghum sudan grass, and sunn hemp are grown for two to three months each year, then integrated into the soil. Tractor use is limited to twice a year, a spader replaces heavier industrial equipment, and one field has been converted to no-till. Instead of fossil-fuel-based nitrogen fertilizer, the farm uses organic amendments and makes its own compost from locally sourced bagasse and horse manure from local stables. Weeds are managed by hand and by keeping soil covered with landscape fabric or natural mulch.
