Pasture-based farm raising heritage beef, pork, poultry, lamb, and eggs outside Woodstock, ON
Greener Pastures Eco Farm is a 75-acre ecological farm outside Woodstock, Ontario, started in 2015 by Carl and Andrea VanRooyen. The farm raises 100% grass-fed beef and lamb, heritage pastured pork, heritage pastured poultry, and free-range eggs. Charcuterie is also available. Products can be purchased through the on-farm shoppe, an online shop, and at the Woodstock Farmers Market. The farm also offers bookable on-farm experiences. Three principles guide every decision on the farm: humanely raised animals, pasture-based management, and the use of heritage breeds. Learn more on their About Page.
Greener Pastures Eco Farm uses no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. All animals have year-round access to the outdoors and are raised on pasture, with rotational grazing practiced so land can recover between grazing periods. The farm avoids beak trimming, tail docking, teeth clipping, and artificial insemination. Heritage breed livestock are chosen both to preserve genetics and to suit pasture-based systems. Heritage pigs, typically Berkshire and Tamworth crosses, are rotated through woodlot paddocks and fed a mix of organic grains (oats, spelt, field peas, and flax) milled on the farm, alongside whey from Gunn's Hill Artisan Cheese, brewers grain from Upper Thames Brewery, coffee chaff from Early Bird Coffee Roasters, and cacao husks from Habitual Chocolate. Pigs are raised for around 10 to 12 months, in keeping with the slower growth rate of heritage breeds.
