The farm raises purebred American Milking Devon cattle, a heritage breed valued for producing well-marbled beef and rich milk on grass and hay alone. The venture began as a land rehabilitation project, seeding down forages on degraded farmland and selecting a breed suited to pasture-based farming. Devonside cattle are fed grass and hay only, with no corn or other grains. Minerals and kelp are available to the herd free choice. The farm raises its animals free from GMO feeds and hormone implants, and uses antibiotics only as a rare, life-saving measure. Weather permitting, cattle spend most of their time on pasture from May through early November. A system of rotational grazing is used to optimize pastures. Through winter, animals are provided shelter with clean straw bedding and access to an outdoor exercise yard. The hay fed in winter is grown by organic methods. The farm applies sustainable and ecological farming methods aimed at building soil fertility, nutrient density, and biodiversity.
