Farmstead sheep milk cheese, yogurt, and pasture-raised lamb and pork from a 40-acre Northern Monterey County ranch.
Garden Variety Cheese is a small farmstead operation on 40-acre Monkeyflower Ranch, producing sheep milk cheese, yogurt, and raw sheep milk. The farm began commercial milking and cheese production in March 2009 and keeps a flock of 80 ewes, each named after a garden flower. Products include both aged and fresh cheeses alongside sheep milk yogurt. Monkeyflower Ranch also raises lamb and pork, sold as whole or half animals and in sampler packs. The farm hosts open houses and farm dinners, giving customers the chance to visit the ranch directly.
Garden Variety Cheese milks a flock of 80 dairy sheep that are seasonal producers, with breeding staggered so fresh milk is available for yogurt throughout the year. The milking ewes graze on fresh pasture and are supplemented with alfalfa hay, organic brewer's grain sourced from Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, and organic grain from Modesto Milling. The farm does not use chemical wormers or antibiotics, relying instead on rotational grazing, concentrated garlic juice, and other natural methods to maintain animal health.
