Small-scale market farm offering CSA vegetable shares, pasture-raised eggs, and seasonal flowers near the Quabbin Reservoir.
Free Living Farm is a human-scale market garden run by Michael and Cara Zueger on 2 acres in Petersham, Massachusetts. The farm launched in Brookfield, MA in 2018 and relocated to Petersham in late 2021. It grows a wide diversity of vegetables alongside pasture-raised organic eggs, broiler chickens, culinary and medicinal herbs, fresh ginger, seed garlic, dahlias, and dried flower arrangements. Produce reaches customers through a 22-week CSA program, a seasonal on-farm stand, the Sturbridge Farmers Market, and local restaurants. CSA shares are harvested the day of pickup and are available in standard and large sizes, with pickup locations in Petersham, East Brookfield, and Worcester. Learn more on their About Page.
Free Living Farm grows using regenerative methods designed to build soil biology and structure without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or fertilizers. Specific practices include minimum and no-tillage, diverse cover cropping, composting, mulching, crop rotation, and beneficial and pollinator habitat incorporation. Chickens are pasture-rotated across the land. The farm also uses foliar nutrition applications, beneficial soil and plant inoculations, and ongoing soil mineral balancing and remineralization to support plant health and nutrient density. The farm describes its approach as a blend of holistic, ancient, and modern growing methods aimed at working with the surrounding ecology rather than against it.
