Sixth-generation Florida ranch raising All Grass (Forage) Fed beef, pasture-raised pork, chicken, lamb, goat, and eggs.
Deep Roots Meat is a family-owned ranch in Madison County, Florida, operated by the Platt family, who has raised cattle in Florida for six generations. Founded in 2009 by Harold "Hotshot" Platt and his son Troy, the business grew out of years of research into finishing cattle on 100% grass and forages. The ranch holds a USDA All Grass (Forage) Fed Beef label, which distinguishes its beef from conventional grass-fed products. Today, Troy and his son Tyler manage the operation alongside other family members. In addition to beef, the ranch raises pasture-raised pork, chicken, lamb, goat, and eggs, with all animals bred, born, and raised on the property. Farm tours are also offered. Deep Roots Meat raises all livestock without antibiotics, hormones, or mRNA vaccines. Cattle, lamb, and goat are finished on 100% grass and forages; pork and chicken are pasture-raised. All animals are bred, born, and raised on the ranch. The farm uses rotational grazing to move livestock through pastures and allow grasses to rest and regrow. Forages are planted using no-till methods to preserve soil organic matter and reduce erosion. Organic fertilizers are used in place of synthetic inputs. The ranch also relies on dung beetles as a natural tool for soil aeration, manure management, and fly control, and uses roller chopping for brush and weed management without overturning the soil. The farm grows, cuts, and bales its own hay to supplement forage during periods of limited pasture availability.
