Every product at Debra's Natural Gourmet is vetted against detailed written standards. Artificial flavors, colors, and synthetic sweeteners are not permitted. The store prioritizes organic products and stocks only the GMO-free option for commodity items that offer one. Distributor produce must be certified organic, while produce from trusted local farmers may be accepted uncertified if they follow organic practices and use no artificial pesticides. Poultry, eggs, meat, and dairy must come from animals with some freedom of range, with grass-fed and pastured animals strongly prioritized. No dairy containing rBGH or routinely fed antibiotics is stocked. Wild fish from sustainable fisheries is preferred over farm-raised. Fair Trade and direct-trade sourcing are weighted factors. Local products are prioritized partly to reduce food miles. The store also weighs corporate ownership, preferring companies whose full lines meet its standards and whose owners share its values.
