Family vegetable farm growing heirloom tomatoes, salad greens, cut flowers, and CSA shares at Woodside Farm.
Daffodil Hill Growers operates at Woodside Farm in Southbury, representing the third generation of farming for the Blersch family, whose roots on this land go back to 1949. The farm focuses exclusively on field vegetable production, specializing in heirloom tomatoes, specialty eggplant, hydroponic lettuce, cut flowers, and winter salad greens. It is a multi-generational family operation, with Dan overseeing field production and Sara managing crop planning, quality control, and the farm crew. Daffodil Hill Growers sells at several farmers' markets across both summer and winter seasons, and offers Summer and Fall/Early Winter CSA programs with pickup options on-farm and at the Bethel Farmers' Market. Daffodil Hill Growers uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) rather than routine spraying: the fields are scouted for pest and disease issues, and a spray decision is made only when a threshold is reached. The farm states that its first choice of spray is an organic option roughly 95% of the time. Cover crops of oats and clover are planted between rows to add nutrients to the soil, attract beneficial insects, and suppress weeds; the farm does not use glyphosate herbicides. The farm also carries fruit sourced from an eighth-generation stone-fruit orchard.
