Fifth-generation Jersey dairy farm producing farmstead cheese, beef, and raw milk in Iowa.
Cinnamon Ridge Dairy Farm is a fifth-generation, family-owned century farm founded in 1988 by John and Joan Maxwell. The farm raises a registered Jersey herd that ranks first in the nation for overall milk production and protein. From that milk, cheesemaker Edwin produces a wide range of farmstead cheeses: curds in more than a dozen flavors, cheddar and gouda blocks, and cave-aged wheels including Herbsen Rock (Alpine style), Cinnamon Ridge Select (Bierkäse style), and Maxwell Munster. Beyond cheese, the farm sells beef, raw milk, and additional locally sourced goods through its on-farm store and online shop. The farm also offers guided tours and hosts farm-to-table lunch events, welcoming visitors of all ages to see modern dairy operations up close.
Cinnamon Ridge Dairy Farm milks its registered Jersey cows using Lely robotic milking systems, which allow cows to be milked on their own schedule. The farm describes its approach to sustainability as long-standing, citing cover crops as a core practice that improves soil moisture retention, builds micronutrients, and reduces the need for outside inputs. The Maxwell family frames this as regenerative agriculture practiced across generations, not as a recent trend. All cheese is farmstead, made directly from the milk of the farm's own herd. The farm has received recognition at the Iowa State Fair for its cheese and earned a Good Neighbor Award in 2021.
