Veteran-owned farm raising Buelingo beef and growing a 200-plus tree heritage fruit orchard in Kentucky.
Bluegrass Belties Farm & Orchard is a veteran-owned family farm operated by Jimmy and Katie Martin-Sorrell and their children. The farm raises a selectively bred Buelingo beef herd and tends a 200-plus tree orchard planted across four acres. The orchard grows 17 varieties of antique heritage apples alongside peaches, pears, Asian pears, pawpaws, and berries. The farm also produces eggs and fruit products including butters, jams, and preserves. Bluegrass Belties joined the Kentucky Proud Homegrown for Heroes Program in 2014. A portion of each harvest is donated to the local community and local organizations. Learn more on their About Page.
Bluegrass Belties raises its Buelingo cattle on a forage diet of grass and hay from birth. The farm offers both a 100-percent grass-fed option and a grass-finished option, the latter adding a short finishing period of 45 to 80 days with local corn, high-protein hay, and four additional ingredients (no soy), compared to a near-400-day commercial feedout. Corn is also provided in small amounts during extreme cold to prevent body-mass loss. Vaccinations are given once as calves and are not used after six months of age. The herd is processed at a USDA-inspected facility, dry-aged in the cooler for approximately two weeks, then cut and vacuum-sealed. The farm uses diatomaceous earth mixed with trace minerals to help control herd parasites. The orchard aims to grow fruit as naturally as possible, though the farm notes that some chemical treatments are necessary given the humidity of the region.
