North Georgia family farm raising USDA Grass-Fed Certified beef from a Black Baldy herd.
Big Oak Beef is a small, family-owned farm in north Georgia operated by the Nix family, who have been raising cattle since the farm was established in 1969. The herd consists of Black Baldies, a cross between Hereford cows and an Aberdeen Angus bull. Customers can order a whole cow, half cow, quarter cow, or a box of selected cuts, with whole and half cow orders customized to the buyer's preferred cuts. All beef is processed at a local, family-owned, USDA-inspected butcher shop, then vacuum-sealed and fresh-frozen. Big Oak Beef holds USDA Grass-Fed Certification and is an official Georgia Grown Agricultural Producer.
The herd grazes on pastures of fescue, Bermuda grass, orchard grass, and a mix of other grasses, moving from pasture to pasture throughout the day. During winter, cattle are fed hay. The farm raises no stockyard operation and cattle are not confined to troughs or enclosed water areas. Big Oak Beef states its beef is free of hormones, steroids, and antibiotics. Cattle are raised from their mother's milk through natural forage. After butchering at a USDA-inspected facility, cuts are vacuum-sealed and fresh-frozen to preserve flavor and texture.
