Alderspring Ranch is a family-owned and operated cattle ranch run by Glenn and Caryl Elzinga, their seven daughters, and a small crew. The ranch raises certified organic, 100% grass-fed and finished beef on wild Idaho mountain pastures, and has been shipping direct to customers since 2005. In addition to beef, the ranch offers certified organic grass-fed lamb, certified organic pastured butter, raw milk sheep cheese, pastured poultry, and pastured pork. Alderspring dry-ages its beef, a process it has refined over 30 years to develop tenderness and flavor. Alderspring's cattle graze certified organic home pastures and organic hay from fall through spring, then move to a 46,000-acre certified organic rangeland in summer. The ranch holds USDA Organic certification and an add-on Real Organic Project certification, which requires soil-building practices, pasture-based animal welfare standards, and verified regenerative methods. Since 2015, the ranch has used inherding: mounted riders camp with and herd the cattle group 24 hours a day, preventing overgrazing of riparian areas and enabling non-lethal coexistence with wolves. Home pastures follow an adaptive rotational grazing plan using portable electric fencing and high-frequency moves. The ranch uses no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, hormones, or GMOs. A life cycle analysis by the ranch found its regenerative practices result in net carbon sequestration, with soil organic matter on home pastures rising from a ranch-wide average of 2.45% in 2010 to 7.75% by 2022.
