Z Bar Cattle Co. is a family-owned cattle ranch and butcher shop that raises Angus beef on its ranch in Sunset, Texas, and sells cuts through its retail shops. The business got its start in 2008 and expanded into its grass-fed program in 2015. Shoppers can choose from individual cuts including steaks, roasts, ribs, brisket, ground beef, bones, and organs, as well as pork, chicken, and bundle packages. Z Bar also carries raw dog food, local honey, and its own line of seasonings. Z Bar Cattle Co. is a USDA-certified All Natural feeding facility, third-party verified as All Natural and NHTC (non-hormone treated cattle) since July 2017, which it calls a first among USDA feeding facilities in North Texas. No antibiotics, ionophores, or added hormones are used. Angus cattle graze 4-15 acre pastures with fresh water, shade, and wind breaks. Grass-fed cattle graze rotationally on bermuda, WW-Bdhal, and native grasses in summer, and on a planted mix of wheat, oats, and sometimes clover in winter, with most pastures rotating every 7-10 days to let grasses recover. Grain-fed cattle are kept separate and fed a mixed ration for 150-200 days. When supplemental hay is needed, the ranch uses non-GMO Buffalo Alfalfa grown in central Oklahoma. Instead of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, it uses annual crop rotations and prescribed burning, and is developing a cover crop system with the Natural Resource Conservation Service.
