Sister-run farm offering a winter and spring CSA, farmstand produce, and a u-pick garden for flowers and herbs.
Winter Sister Farm is a sister-run operation bordering the Laguna de Santa Rosa in south Sebastopol, focused on growing vegetables, flowers, and herbs through the cold-weather months of roughly November to May. Its primary offering is a seasonal CSA membership available in free-choice or farmer's-choice box formats, both of which include access to a half-acre u-pick garden for flowers and herbs. An on-farm farmstand, open to all, carries a rotating weekly selection of roots, winter squash, cooking greens, brassicas, salad greens, and other cold-tolerant crops. The farm also raises sheep and sells wool. A Community Support Fund provides sliding-scale pricing for CSA memberships. Learn more on their About Page.
Winter Sister Farm uses two strategies to supply food through the colder months: summer-grown storage crops (potatoes, onions, winter squash, beans, and corn) are harvested and stockpiled for distribution through winter, while fresh crops are grown on-site using caterpillar tunnels and row cover to regulate temperatures and protect against frost and wind. Every field is cover-cropped once a year, and the farm's sheep graze through the cover crop to build soil and reduce tractor use. Compost applications and organic amendments supplement fertility. Primary tillage is done with a reciprocating spader to reduce soil compaction; most cultivation and all harvesting are done by hand. The farm describes its standards as following organic principles.
