Overview
Family-run apple orchard with pick-your-own apples, pumpkins, a farm store, and seasonal festivals.
Wills Family Orchard is a family-owned and operated farm that has been growing apples in Dallas County, Iowa since 1992. The 65-acre property sits along a ridge top and includes 8 acres of apple orchards with more than 3,000 trees across 20 varieties, one acre of peach trees, five acres of pumpkins, and a one-acre corn maze. Visitors can pick their own apples and pumpkins, or shop pre-picked fruit and orchard goods at the on-farm General Store and Kitchen/Bakery. The farm store carries freshly made apple cider donuts, caramel apples, apple pie, apple butter, raw honey, apple cider, cold brew lattes, and handmade goods. The farm also hosts seasonal Apple and Pumpkin Fest weekends featuring hayrack rides, barnyard animals, and activities for all ages. Learn more on their About Page.
Wills Family Orchard runs a split operation: one part of its apple orchard is Certified Organic, and the rest is what the farm calls Sustainably Grown. The organic blocks have held USDA organic certification since 2000. In the Sustainably Grown orchard, the farm blends organic management with the softest conventional inputs, applying pest-specific products only when needed and at key points in each pest's lifecycle. Neither portion uses conventional synthetic herbicides, antibiotics, synthetic crop-thinning or fruit-retention products, or restricted-use pesticides. Woodchip mulch under tree rows suppresses weeds, builds soil organic matter, and conserves moisture. Rainwater is captured in an on-farm pond for irrigation, and diverse annual and perennial flowers support pollinators and beneficial insects. Bluebird houses throughout the property encourage natural insect predation. Only organically approved products wash harvested apples, and apples are never waxed after harvest.
