Family farm offering a seasonal CSA, pasture-raised eggs, and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
Grade A Gardens is a family-run farm growing fruits and vegetables on 30 acres in Earlham, Iowa. Founded as a gourmet garlic operation, the farm has grown to produce a wide range of seasonal crops, from heirloom tomatoes and garlic to sweet potatoes, winter squash, and pasture-raised eggs. Farmers Jordan and Whitney Clasen own and operate the farm, which they purchased with the help of SILT (the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust) in 2021. Produce is sold through a seasonal CSA, at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market, and to a select group of Des Moines restaurants and specialty grocers. All produce is sold within 60 miles of the farm. Learn more on their About Page.
Grade A Gardens uses regenerative growing methods and carefully selects seed varieties across its full crop list. Heritage chickens are raised on pasture, spending their days grazing and eating bugs and vegetable scraps. The flock is fed a non-soy, non-GMO grain diet and is moved weekly to fresh ground, which also fertilizes future vegetable fields and reduces the farm's need to purchase off-farm fertility inputs. Garlic, a founding crop of the farm, is grown in around 45,000 plants across roughly 8 varieties. The farm describes its approach to sustainable agriculture as central to supporting a strong local economy and a healthy ecosystem.
