Pasture-raised duck eggs, fruit, and pantry goods from a regenerative family farm in the Capay Valley.
Vitis and Ovis Farm is a small, multi-generational Swiss-American-Ethiopian family farm on 11 acres in California's Capay Valley. The farm centers on a flock of pasture-raised ducks and a 1.2-acre vineyard, alongside orchards of elderberries, jujubes, pomegranates, mulberries, figs, and quince. Its core products include duck eggs (sold by the dozen), dried jujube chips, elderberry syrup, quince jam with vanilla and orange, and a line of chili powders and hot sauces in Aleppo, Basque, and Berbere styles. Shoppers can order online, join a duck egg CSA subscription, visit the farm directly on pickup days, or find the farm at the Sacramento Certified Farmers Market on Sunday mornings.
Vitis and Ovis Farm practices regenerative agriculture, with a focus on long-term soil health and building toward a closed-loop farming system. The farm uses swale construction to capture rainfall, retain water, and prevent erosion, in collaboration with specialists in landscape design. Soil is kept covered to enhance fertility, reduce erosion, and support a healthy microbial environment. The duck flock serves a dual purpose: the birds assist with pest control and contribute to soil health through natural fertilization. Fruit tree varieties were selected partly for drought resistance, including native elderberries, jujubes, and pomegranates. The farm holds USDA National Organic Program (NOP) certification through CCOF, covering crops, livestock, and handling, and is also certified by the Real Organic Project.
