Overview
Working farm with pick-your-own produce, a farm market, and seasonal festivals in Ventura County.
Underwood Family Farms is a fully operational working farm in Ventura County that grows a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables sold directly to consumers. Visitors can pick their own produce in the fields, shop field-fresh crops and jarred goods at the on-site Farm Market, or find Underwood at farmers' markets held throughout the week. The farm has been growing produce in Ventura County for more than 45 years. It hosts seasonal festivals, including a Springtime Easter Festival, a Fall Harvest Festival, and a Christmas on the Farm event. School tours, educational farm tours, farm camp, birthday parties at the Farm Animal Center, and a Healthy Harvest Box subscription round out its offerings. Learn more on their About Page.
Underwood Family Farms describes its approach as sustainable agriculture rather than certified organic. The farm uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM): it scouts fields with pheromone traps, releases beneficial insects to manage harmful pests, and applies sprays only when necessary to save a crop, limiting synthetic materials to those not implicated as potential carcinogens. Compost, green-waste mulch, cover crops, and crop rotation are used to build organic matter and maintain healthy soil biology. On the 60 acres farmed for its markets, the farm has planted native perennial and annual plants to attract beneficial insects; in its lemon groves, cover crops support an insectary for beneficial insects and nematodes. Nearly all crops are irrigated with drip tape, and plastic mulch and short, frequent watering cycles are used to conserve water. Fertigation and soil and tissue sampling guide fertilizer use. The farm states it grows no GMO crops and has adopted a formal food safety program.
