Restaurant & Wine Shop

Seasonal Italian- and French-inspired restaurant in Midtown Sacramento, open since 1996.
The Waterboy is a neighborhood restaurant that has been serving lunch and dinner in Midtown Sacramento since November 1, 1996. The kitchen works from a seasonal menu drawn primarily from the cuisines of northern Italy and southern France. Chef-owner Rick Mahan trained at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco and later helped shape Sacramento's dining scene before opening The Waterboy. The restaurant offers a diverse wine list alongside a full bar featuring cocktails and aperitifs. Dine-in and take-out are both available, and private dining can be arranged. The Waterboy also hosts recurring Thursday Dinner events: ticketed, limited-seating evenings built around a single prix fixe menu for all guests. Learn more on their About Page.
The Waterboy sources ingredients from named local farms and producers, including Full Belly Farm, Soil Born Farms, Bare Naked Birdies, Twin Peaks Orchards, and Klingeman Ranch. It also features pasture-raised California Berkshire pork from Sweet Water Farm and Ranch Co., described by the restaurant as regenerative ranchers in the Central Sierras committed to ethical practices. Chef-owner Rick Mahan has cited Alice Waters and Chez Panisse as a foundational influence, with a guiding philosophy of using local, sustainable ingredients and letting quality produce drive simple preparations. The seasonal menu changes to reflect what is available from these producer relationships.
