Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op (SNFC) is a member-owned natural grocery store that traces its roots to a buying club founded in 1971 and incorporated as a cooperative in 1973. It has operated from its current R Street location since 2016. The store is open to all shoppers and carries organic groceries, a scratch-made deli, an in-house bakery, the largest bulk foods selection in Sacramento, meat and seafood, wine and spirits, specialty cheeses, and a natural wellness section. Anyone may become a member with a refundable investment starting at $25, gaining access to member discounts, patronage refunds in profitable years, and a vote in co-op governance. SNFC's produce department is 100% organic, sourced from long-standing local growers and, for items like bananas and avocados that cannot be sourced locally, through Fair Trade cooperatives such as Equal Exchange. The store sells no products with artificial preservatives, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, colorings, or sweeteners. All dairy is made without artificial hormones, and eggs are cage-free, certified humane, or pastured. Meat and poultry include Non-GMO, organic, grass-fed, Wagyu, and regeneratively pastured options. Poultry is cage-free, vegetarian-fed, and free from antibiotics, added hormones, nitrites, and artificial preservatives. Seafood follows Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch sustainability standards. The deli uses certified organic produce, grains, and beans and strives to avoid seed oils.
