The Farm at Windy Hill is a working, learning, and destination farm established in the fall of 2014 on a family farm property in Mentone, Alabama. Its primary mission is to produce fresh food for the dining hall at nearby Camp DeSoto while giving campers the opportunity to experience farm life firsthand. The farm grows seasonal produce and flowers and raises 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef, pastured and wooded pork, and pasture-raised eggs. An on-farm market gives the wider public a chance to shop the seasonal selection of produce, flowers, meat, and eggs, and to meet the farmers. The Farm at Windy Hill uses biologically friendly and regenerative growing practices, with no chemical or synthetic pesticides or herbicides applied to crops or pastures. Soil fertility is built through cover crops, compost, and rotational grazing that integrates animal manure into both gardens and pastures. The farm practices organic-farming methods but is not currently pursuing certification. Laying hens are fed a non-GMO, non-soy diet and forage free-range in both wooded areas and open pasture. Cattle are raised on a 100% grass-fed and grass-finished diet, on chemical-free pastures, with no hormones and no preventative antibiotics; the herd is a locally developed breed. Pigs are raised outdoors using Duroc and old-line hog genetics, with no hormones and no antibiotics.
