Mountain Sun Farm is a certified organic fruit and vegetable farm situated at 1,650 feet elevation on Lookout Mountain, farming 8 acres of sandy loam and loam soils at the headwaters of Little River. The farm was established on owned land in 2017 by Liz and Brian, both Auburn University College of Agriculture graduates who had farmed on leased land for three years prior. Its primary sales channel is a 30-week main-season CSA running from mid-April through mid-November, with weekly produce bags delivered to pick-up locations in Chattanooga, Ft. Payne, and Mentone. A Winter CSA and weekly CSA add-on store extend buying options beyond the main share. Mountain Sun Farm also hosts a Saturday morning on-farm market and offers u-pick crops. Mountain Sun Farm prioritizes ecological diversity and soil health through intensive legume cover cropping, crop rotation, and habitat for beneficial insects and birds. Fields are kept in cover crops (sunn hemp, hairy vetch, crimson clover, and others) whenever not in a cash crop, supplying all of the farm's nitrogen needs without synthetic inputs or conventionally derived fertilizers. Flowering insectary strips of buckwheat and sweet alyssum are interplanted throughout the fields to attract beneficial insects. The farm maintains songbird and American kestrel nest boxes to support insectivorous birds, a primary pest-control strategy. Weed control relies entirely on mechanical cultivation; no herbicides are used. No plastic mulch is used, including for strawberries. The only pesticide applied is Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), a naturally occurring biopesticide used for caterpillar pressure. Only certified organic cover crop seed is used where available.
