Volunteer-run nonprofit farm growing fresh produce for food pantries and the public farmstand
Smart Farm of Barrington is a volunteer-run, nonprofit farm operating under Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. Founded by Kathy Gabelman, it began as a small community garden plot and grew into a 2-acre farm with a hoop house, greenhouse, and tractor. The farm grows a variety of vegetables throughout the growing season and donates close to 16,000 lbs of produce per year, equivalent to roughly 14,500 meals. Much of that harvest goes directly to local food pantries, which historically accepted only canned goods. The farm also runs a seasonal farmstand at multiple locations, with all proceeds supporting its food security work. It serves as an educational resource on sustainable gardening and farming practices. Learn more on their About Page.
Smart Farm of Barrington operates with a stated commitment to restoring soil and water, and works with the Rodale Institute, a nonprofit organic farming organization, for consultative guidance. It added a hoop house to extend the growing season beyond what the short Midwest climate typically allows. The farm composts food scraps on-site. Its values explicitly include acting as stewards of the land and employing practices that restore soil and water health. The farm grows nutritionally dense produce and educates patients, community members, and hospital staff on sustainable gardening methods.
