Woman-owned indoor mushroom farm growing gourmet mushrooms and producing functional mushroom tinctures.
Golden Gills Mushrooms is a woman-owned and women-led indoor mushroom farm operating out of a 5,000-square-foot facility in Wauconda, Illinois. The farm cultivates gourmet and functional mushrooms and produces a range of mushroom-based products. Its two primary product lines are dried mushrooms (including whole dried mushrooms, lion's mane powder, and a mushroom seasoning blend) and an apothecary line of functional mushroom tinctures. Tincture varieties include reishi, cordyceps, chaga, maitake, turkey tail, and lion's mane, available individually or in curated bundles. Golden Gills also participates in a year-round CSA and fresh market in partnership with Elawa Farm Foundation, and donates excess harvests to a local food pantry.
Golden Gills Mushrooms cultivates its mushrooms entirely indoors in a repurposed facility that includes a dedicated clean room, incubation room, and tincture production room where ultrasonic extraction and bottling take place. The farm's substrate is a mix of kiln-dried red oak sawdust and organic soy hulls, sourced from Meadowlark Farm and Mill and Maine Cap N' Stem. The business states it makes every effort to source as locally as possible and works only with trusted, reputable vendors. Tinctures are produced using an ultrasonic extraction process on-site. Golden Gills describes its sourcing approach as sustainably oriented, built around partnerships for resource recycling and recapturing still-viable waste streams.
