Certified organic farm and nursery growing cool-season vegetables, microgreens, herbs, hops, and value-added condiments at high altitude.
Sierra Valley Farms is a 65-acre certified organic farm and nursery situated on the Middle Fork of the Feather River, operated by Gary Romano and his family. Originally established as a native plant nursery in 1990, the farm expanded into certified organic produce in 1999. It grows a wide range of cool-season vegetables and some fruits, microgreens, herbs, hops, and value-added condiments. Sierra Valley Farms sells primarily through farmers markets in the Reno/Tahoe area and holds the only on-farm Certified Farmers Market in California. The farm also offers a CSA program designed specifically for restaurants. Agrotourism is part of its operation, with events such as Dinners in the Barn and on-site farm camping.
The farm goes back three generations in Sierra Valley, and its corrals carry years of composted manures and organic matter that enrich the soil. The Romano family uses cover crops, crop rotation, and the natural rhythms of the four seasons to maintain soil fertility. The property sits at 5,000 feet elevation with only 60 to 70 frost-free days per year, a harsh climate that the farm credits with producing high-quality organic vegetables. Sierra Valley Farms holds certified organic status, first achieved for produce in 1999.
