Family-owned date farm growing pesticide-free Medjool, Barhi, and Black Gold dates since 2002.
Sam Cobb Date Farms is a family-owned operation established in 2002, with date ranches in Desert Hot Springs and Blythe, California. Founder Sam Cobb holds an Associate of Science in Agronomy from Reedley College and a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education from Fresno State University, and spent 30 years with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service before farming full time. The farm grows seven varieties of pesticide-free dates, including Medjool, Barhi, and its own proprietary variety, Black Gold. Black Gold is a rare variety developed from a roadside seedling, described by the farm as having flavor notes of chocolate, dark cherry, and caramel. Dates are sold online year-round and in person on weekends from mid-October through mid-April. The farm also sells date palm starts for those interested in growing their own. Learn more on their About Page.
Sam Cobb Date Farms grows all of its dates without pesticides, a practice the farm states explicitly across its product and homepage materials. Founder Sam Cobb brings over 47 years of agricultural knowledge and a formal scientific background in agronomy, plant science, and agricultural engineering to the farming operation. The farm's Black Gold variety was developed on-site from a seedling found growing wild, making it a proprietary variety exclusive to the farm.
