A permaculture date palm and citrus farm in Thermal, California, selling at farmers markets across the state.
Flying Disc Ranch is a date palm and citrus farm in Thermal, California, run by Robert Lower and Christina Kelso. The ranch grows multiple varieties of dates, including Medjool and Barhi, along with citrus, and sells its fruit at farmers markets across California. Robert Lower brings decades of hands-on experience with date palms, personally climbing each tree multiple times per year to prune, pollinate, bag, and harvest. The farm also offers mail-order purchasing by email. Flying Disc Ranch has been featured in Martha Stewart Living and participates in the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival. Flying Disc Ranch describes its approach as 'Authentic and Permaculture,' a method it has practiced throughout its history and became certified in during 2010. The ranch was formerly certified organic by CCOF but the owner withdrew that certification. The soil is never cultivated, and the ranch floor is kept green with a living mulch that protects against harsh sunlight, retains moisture, and provides habitat for beneficial insects. This living mulch causes dates to ripen more slowly, which the farm attributes to sweeter, softer fruit. The ranch produces approximately 200 cubic yards of compost each year from trimmings, branches, and leaves mixed with water and rock dust, applying it around the trunks of date palms, citrus trees, and aloe vera. The farm describes itself as 'ecodynamic,' meaning it operates as a free-flowing ecosystem inspired by biodynamic ideas without following traditional biodynamic certification.
