Family-run market garden offering fresh produce and eggs near Mahomet, Illinois
Salted Spade is a family-run market garden located on a property just west of Mahomet near Spring Lake. It is operated by Seth and Adrienne Waibel, who grew up working in the dirt and developed hands-on experience in growing, prepping, and distributing produce. Seth brings professional background in regenerative and organic agriculture through his work as a farm manager, and the garden is a working extension of that learning. The farm has offered seasonal CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) vegetable shares, connecting local consumers directly with in-season produce. Eggs from the farm's chickens are available for purchase. Garden visits are welcomed, and the farm maintains a newsletter for updates on availability and events. Learn more on their About Page.
Salted Spade uses cover crops between vegetable plantings and over winter to build soil, suppress weeds, and improve soil structure. The farm works to reduce tillage wherever possible to protect soil biology and structure, using a broad fork as a minimal-disturbance tool when loosening deeper soil is needed. Companion cropping is practiced to encourage plants that mutually benefit each other, including using intercropping as a form of organic pest management. The farm states that it follows and aims to exceed organic standards in its day-to-day growing, though it does not hold organic certification. Salted Spade describes its overall approach as mimicking the principles found in natural systems.
